SBIRT Colorado is dedicated to the delivery of early prevention for those who are non-dependent substance users, improving healthcare and changing lives.

In 2006, SAMHSA awarded a five-year, $2.8 million annual grant to the Colorado Office of the Governor to implement three key objectives for SBIRT:

- Funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration
- Administered by the Division of Behavioral Health
- Managed by Peer Assistance Services, Inc.
- Partners include: OMNI Institute, Health TeamWorks (formerly known as Colorado Clinical Guidelines Collaborative), and the Colorado Providers Association.

- Expand the continuum of care to include universal screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment in healthcare settings.
- Use universal screening to create awareness about the No. 1 preventable health issue – substance use.
- Sustain the SBIRT practice in healthcare facilities statewide beyond the life of the grant.
