A CHANGE IN THINKING ABOUT SUBSTANCE USE
SBIRT or Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment is a comprehensive, integrated, public health approach based on universal screenings which create awareness about America’s No. 1 preventable health issue—substance use.

SBIRT Colorado is dedicated to the delivery of early prevention for those who are non-dependent substance users, improving healthcare and changing lives.

SBIRT Colorado:
A policy steering committee appointed by the Governor and chaired by José Esquibel, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, is developing a sustainability plan for the SBIRT practice within healthcare settings.

In 2006, SAMHSA awarded a five-year, $2.8 million annual grant to the Colorado Office of the Governor to implement three key objectives for SBIRT:
  • Expand the continuum of care to include universal screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment in healthcare settings.
  • Use universal screening to create awareness about the No. 1 preventable health issue – substance use.
  • Sustain the SBIRT practice in healthcare facilities statewide beyond the life of the grant.
