Youth in the Workplace Designed to focus on youth 16–24 employed by Youth Corps who are the highest risk populations for substance abuse. These youth are often poorly educated, have few job skills and are repeatedly considered dispensable by employers. PAS and YC are adapting and implementing the Team Awareness Model Program which has traditionally focused on substance abuse prevention and wellness in the workplace for an older population, to determine its effectiveness within this younger workforce. A successful effort with the YC population demonstrates to employers that TA can assist this group to become productive, dependable employees. Team Awareness, developed by Dr. Joel Bennett, is an evidence-based substance abuse prevention and wellness in the workplace program. Through support from SAMHSA and Dr. Bennett, PAS has adapted the model to fit the needs of the young adults working at Mile High Youth Corps. PAS also provides intensive training for MHYC staff to improve their ability to support the wellness needs of the employees and implement the model themselves with this population. Additionally, PAS are helping to customize the SAMHSA Healthy Workplace website to appeal to this younger workforce and augment the TA training. PAS functions as the Employee Assistance Program for MHYC. Services provided include on-site consultations with youth participants and referrals for a variety of services. These services, in conjunction with the Team Awareness program, help ensure that the MHYC youth have the skills and support to make healthy choices to be successful in the workforce.
